The Friday Night Team final is one of the highlights of the Canadian National Championships with four representatives chosen from each province to compete in each discipline.  Tumbling was up first with the Ontario Girls picking up the gold.  The Men's tumbling team did a great job but landed in fourth spot.  Still the event had lots of excitement, great tumbling, and a whole lot of hooting and hollering.  Congratulations to the OGC's Michael Chaves who competed in the team final.

June Schedule some of it

Here is the first three weeks of the June schedule.  Mostly what you need to pay attention to here is the change of schedule for the first two weeks to accommodate for Tryouts and Retryouts.

If you are presently in the tumbling program you do NOT need to come to the OPEN Tumbling Tryouts.  You will have your athlete come to the "RETRYOUTS" that are scheduled over the week during their regular scheduled training.  Sorry for the confusion.

My apologies for the changes but the schedule is tight with the extra June competitions this year.

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding.

Vaculik tops women’s field in qualifications at Canadian gymnastics championships

REGINA -- Olympic hopeful Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., led all competitors in the women’s qualification round at the 2012 Canadian gymnastics championships on Tuesday with a score of 56.350 points.

Former Canadian junior champion Victoria Moors of Cambridge, Ont., placed second with 55.650 points and Ellie Black of Halifax was third at 54.900 in a field of 21 gymnasts.

Vaculik topped the field on beam and uneven bars and was fourth on floor and 11th on vault.

“There’s a lot of pressure right now and it’s really good to see how everyone is doing,” said Vaculik, who is vying to earn one of five spots on the Canadian women’s team heading to London this summer.

Results from the Canadian championships and a final selection meet at the end of June in Gatineau, Que., will count heavily towards the outcome.

“After we qualified a full team for the Games it’s been an amazing feeling,” said Vaculik. “We’ve done our job as a country to send a full team and it’s just great to be here knowing that we’re going to send five girls to the Olympics.”

Vaculik, a two-time Canadian all around champion taking a year off from Stanford University to pursue her Olympic dream, played a key role in helping Canada earn one of just 12 full-team berths at the final qualification for the Games last January.

Notably absent on the opening day of the championships was Toronto’s Peng Peng Lee, who was on her way home with a dislocated knee after a crash landing on vault during a practice session on Monday.

Lee, Canada’s top performer at the 2011 world championships in Tokyo, will undergo an MRI in Toronto on Wednesday morning to determine the extent of the injury to her left knee.

“It’s too early to speculate about whether Peng Peng can recover from this injury in time for the Olympics,” said Gymnastics Canada President and CEO, Jean Paul Caron of Ottawa.

“We are going to wait for the MRI results and hope for the best.”

The women’s senior all around finals take place on Thursday.

Competition continues Wednesday in women’s novice, men’s junior and argo classes and trampoline and tumbling.

Canadian gymnastics championships set the stage for Summer Olympics

REGINA -- Over 600 competitors will be vying for titles in all three gymnastics disciplines -- artistic, rhythmic and trampoline -- at this year’s Canadian championships May 22-26, including some who have already clinched a spot at the upcoming Summer Olympics and others still battling to qualify for the Games.

Highlighting the trampoline competition are three-time Olympic medal winner Karen Cockburn, 2008 Olympic silver medallist Jason Burnett and two-time world medallist Rosannagh MacLennan, all of Toronto.

All three have already qualified for the Games and can use this year’s championships to hone the routines they hope will carry them to a record-breaking Canadian showing this summer in London.

Canada’s rhythmic gymnastics team in the group event will also give spectators a sneak preview of their Olympic routines after clinching its berth at the world championships last September.

It’s the first time Canada has qualified for the Olympics in the group event since it made its debut at the 1996 Games.

Team members are Rose Cossar, Anjelika Reznik, Anastasiya Muntyanu, and Alexandra Landry, all of Toronto, Kelsey Titmarsh of Thornhill, Ont., and Katrina Cameron of Mississauga, Ont.

Canada didn’t qualify any individual rhythmic gymnastics for the Games but rising stars Maria Kitkarska of Montreal and Nerissa Mo of Vancouver headline this year’s senior competition while Patricia Bezzoubenko of Toronto will be looking for her second straight national junior title.

Unlike  the trampoline and rhythmic gymnasts, the pressure to qualify for the Games is still on for competitors in both men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics.

After falling just short of qualifying a full five-man team for the Games, Canada is restricted to sending just one male gymnast to London and competition is expected to be fierce for the lone spot up for grabs.

Among those in the running include 2011 world championship team members Nathan Gafuik of Calgary, Ken Ikeda of Abbotsford, B.C., Kevin Lytwyn of Stoney Creek, Ont., Jackson Payne and Brandon O’Neill, both of Edmonton, Hugh Smith of Halifax, Scott Morgan of Vancouver and a group of younger gymnasts aiming for the 2016 Olympics.

“They’ve all been working very hard on increasing difficulty in their best events to increase their chances,” said Canadian men’s program director Jeff Thomson of Vancouver.

“Some of the younger guys know they are a long shot at best but this is an opportunity to experience the pressure of qualifying for the next Olympics and the older guys with more experience know that they are going to fight it out to see who goes.”

In women’s gymnastics Canada has qualified a full team for the Games with the country’s top competitors vying for one of five openings.

Results from the Canadian championships and a final selection meet at the end of June will count heavily towards Olympic team selection.

“We’re expecting a high level of competition and ultimately a strong team for the Olympics,” said national team director Kyna Fletcher of Vancouver.

Competitors at this year’s Canadian championships include three-time Canadian all around champion Kristina Vaculik of Whitby, Ont., 2010 Elite Canada all around champion Peng Peng Lee of Toronto and 2011 Canadian junior champion Victoria  Moors of Cambridge, Ont.

The Canadian championship also includes competition in non-Olympic tumbling and double mini trampoline events.

Among the medal contenders are Denis Vachon of Burlington, Ont., and Mariah Madigan in men’s and women’s double mini and Emily Smith of Burlington, Ont., and Jon Swaiger of Calgary in men’s and women’s tumbling.
